Obituary of Lois Virginia Gish Rhodes

GISH - 84, died peacefully on August 6, 2014, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was born February 21, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to Eunice Ellen Griffin Gish and Charles Marion Gish, Jr. She graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in microbiology and chemistry, and thereafter was employed by Parke-Davis and the Michigan Department of Health, where she participated in development of the polio vaccine. She married Lt. Eugene Neal Rhodes (of Monroeville, Indiana) at Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, on January 30, 1953. They were stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where she worked in the office of psychological warfare. Following Mr. Rhodes' completion of service, they moved to Kendallville, Indiana. After the births of their three daughters, Mrs. Rhodes began her teaching career at Kendallville HS. She taught for nearly thirty years, sharing her love of science with her biology, anatomy/physiology, and science research classes at East Noble HS. She chaired the ENHS Science Department for most of her tenure, and founded the Bi-Phy-Chem Science Club. She was a natural-borne teacher, exhibiting passion, creativity, and a profound love for her students. She guided thousands of students in science research projects, and inspired countless students to pursue careers in science, engineering, and health care. Mrs. Rhodes chaired the Scientific Research Committee of the International Science and Engineering Fair for many years, and served as a consultant to teachers in foreign countries in setting up their own science fairs. She earned her master's degree in animal physiology from IUPU-FW, and was awarded an honorary PhD from Tri-State University for her work with science students. Upon retirement, the Rhodeses split their time between Indiana and The Villages in Lady Lake, Florida. She was a deaconess of the First Presbyterian Church (Kendallville) and a member of Northlake Presbyterian Church (Lady Lake). She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and of Tri-Kappa service sorority. She enjoyed bridge, golf, and travel. Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter, Wendy Lynne. She is survived by daughters, Lori Patterson MD (and husband Christopher) of Knoxville, and Lynda Rhodes-Stewart DVM (and husband Robert) of Lexington KY; plus grandsons, Bryan, Andrew, and Thomas Patterson. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Shannondale and Arbor Terrace for their loving care of Mrs. Rhodes in her final years.
